Alpaca Prosthetics
This page contains text, videos and links to articles that all reference the use of prosthetics and/or leg braces for alpacas.
We stumbled apon this information in our investigations into alpacas's feet and pasterns, and then because it was interesting we searched a bit deeper. We have compiled it here for the use of anyone who has a problem with their alpaca's legs either needing a brace, or a prosthetic and hope it is of use to you and your vet as a start point. As we come across more we will add it.
This is a video of a Llama wearing a prosthetic:
This link will take you to a website called Handicappedpets and a page dealing mostly with prosthetics for dogs, however if you scroll down the page you will find a picture of an alpaca wearing what looks like a fairly sophisticated prosthetic for his left rear leg. They refer to the alpaca as Tripod the Llama.
We had this link here to an article about a Llama who needed to wear a leg brace. The link won't work due to the nature of the site the article is on. However if you type 'lama leg brace' into google, it should be the first story that is returned.
This link is to a pdf of a magazine called Healing Hands which is a college of veterinary medicine magazine. The issue is titled 'All About Alpacas' and if you go to page 11 of the PDF you can read some information about an alpaca called Cornucopia who was fitted with a prosthetic and a leg brace, it also references that Dr David Anderson has done more of these procedures, so he could be a good person to make contact with if you are wanting some more information.
