This page contains text, pictures and videos that show similarities and comparisons between Huacaya Alpaca and Suri Alpaca.
Alpaca Breed Type
There are two main types of alpaca, they are not officially seperate breeds but are sometimes referred to as such, due to their distinct characteristics. The two types are Huacaya and Suri.
Huacaya
Huacaya have fleece which stands out from their body's in the same manner that sheep do. We chose the picture of the dandelion shown here on the right menu column, to represent our Huacaya as it is a good pictorial representation of the fleece type in comparison to the Suri.
Huacaya video
This video shows Huacaya alpacas in a paddock and its a good look at the rounded shapes of the alpacas and also their pacing gait when walking
Suri
Suri have fleece that hangs down in long locks and parts at the spine. We chose the picture of the New Zealand Silver Fern or Ponga shown here on the right menu column to represent our Suri as it is a good pictorial representation of the fleece type in comparison to the Huacaya. The picture is mean't to represent the fleece parting at the spine and seperating into locks.
Suri Picture Montage
This youtube video is a picture montage of Suri Alpacas clearly showing the fleece style of pencil like locks that hang down from the skin
